Friday Feature: Brain Power

One of the items on my to-do list this summer has been to reduce my bloated inbox(es). In the process, I sometimes stumble upon interesting reads amid the pile-up of non-essentials.

An article that caught my attention earlier this week focused on ways to supercharge your brain. As someone who frequently yearns for a brain as sharp as the one she had (and took for granted) two decades ago, I'm easily drawn in to these types of pieces. And, as someone who teaches brain development (on a very rudimentary level), I feel as though I'm a fairly discriminating reader on this topic, ready to reject suggestions that seem too good to be true.

This article appealed to me from all of those perspectives. It's a clear, easy read that supports its suggestions, which include things I already do. Rather than disappointing me ("Aw, I knew all of this"), it instead validated that those of us who mourn our younger brains have likely developed habits that aren't outdated, but geared to protecting the mental resources we have (paper-and-pencil notes, anyone?)

While no article or single practice can bring back the flexibility and speed of my younger brain, it's good to know that the relationship we adults of a certain age have with technology is more in touch with staying youthful than we might think.
